Ecli Lightbulb
   — An Eco Friendly Shift

Case Study

Ecli is Designed for Sustainability. All products should have a net neutral or positive impact on the environment. I focused on the components of a CFL lightbulb since they were made up of highly toxic materials and ultimately thrown away improperly.

Not if but When — Beryllium, Mercury, Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium and Carbon Bromide are some of the toxic materials left in e-waste dumps. These will be introduced back into the environment via leachate, runoff, or volatilized vapor; incurring devastating complications on human health, local economies, and natural wildlife.

The light bulb's material, way it uses energy and disassembly were all considered. The most viable and home friendly option based off a few LED teardowns, would be a cartridge system, where the PCB and LED could be repaired and reimplemented.

This is the Ecli Lightbulb. The bulb is meant to be a fresh new monocoque style that can fit into any standard fixture and not only take sustainability further but the lightbulbs functionality too. A Very Simple Fit. Replacing a light is easier, no more shattered glass, and no more twisting. The interchangeable diffuser snaps away from the body to reveal the cartridge, LED array and base. The base itself acts as an outlet to plug your cartridge in and out of.

The packaging is not only meant to address environmental awareness but to evoke a sense of luxury and importance. It would derive it's materials from invasive plant life, like knotweed, and recycled materials. Conscious Disposal, New Life. A sustainability driven product can lead to functional innovation, Ecli's modularity can influence new features in future peripheral electronic products such as network routers, home audio, smoke detection and more.
